DIY Glam Christmas Ornament

Who says Christmas ornaments can’t be chic? Let me teach you how to create your own one-of-a-kind DIY glam Christmas ornament and give it as a handmade gift, or hang it on your own tree. Tassels are everywhere now – so we used one to dress up this ornament. It’s super fancy.

What you’ll need:

Most of the items on the list I picked up from my nearest Michaels.
  • Mod Podge (have I ever told you how much I love this stuff?)
  • FastGrab Tacky Glue (better than a glue gun! It’s non-toxic, dries quickly, and won’t burn your fingers or your children)
  • Wired gold ribbon
  • Fancy paper (make sure it is not cardstock, or it won’t bend easily)
  • Glitter
  • Clear plastic globe ornament – this one has a 10″ circumference
  • Stencil (or you can draw your own shapes based on the size of your ornament- each of the ‘footballs’ for this 10″ ornament should be 5 inches tall and 2 inches wide)
  • Paintbrush
  • One tassel per ornament
  • Gift box (optional) – this one should fit it perfectly
  • Your favorite Christmas music – (optional) that just makes it more fun!

Instructions

1. First, cut your paper out into the football shaped slices.

2. Take the silver-colored top off or your ornament and set it aside (you’ll use it later so don’t lose it!). Then apply a layer of Mod Podge to the ornament.

Mod Podge!

3. Carefully place your paper footballs on the ornament as if you are putting the skin back on an orange. The pieces should touch, but not overlap if possible. Mod Podge the paper all the way up into the neck of the ornament, and use the bottom of the plastic globe as a guide to center all your segments. Smooth down all the sides to make sure it all adheres.

4. Add another layer of Mod Podge over all the paper slices and allow to dry (an hour should do it).

5. Cut your ribbon into 3 equal pieces- it should be cut to fit the length of one of the seams where the paper slices meet. To measure, start the ribbon within the neck of the ornament, and cut it right at the bottom of the globe.

6. Use the tacky glue to trace a line of glue at the seam between the paper slices. Stick on your ribbon and hold for maybe 10 seconds to keep in place until it grabs.

Quick drying glue dries clear.

7. Now, cut your final ribbon starting at the neck and going all the way down through the bottom of the globe up to the neck on the other side (basically double what the other ribbons were).

8. Run the glue along the seem (adding a little extra at the bottom of the globe where the tassel will sit). Slide your tassel onto the ribbon and position so it will sit at the bottom of the ornament. Glue the ribbon along the ornament, making sure the tassel is in the correct location. Pinch the ribbon a bit so it holds the tassel in place.

Give a little pinch to the ribbon to hold the tassel in place.

9. Apply a layer of Mod Podge to any sections that you want to glitter. Pour the glitter over the section and pat it gently to make sure it sticks. (I always pour over a piece of paper so that I can collect the excess glitter and pour it back into the container).

10. I painted one of the segments gold for contrast. One layer of paint was sufficient because I wanted to see a little of the paper design underneath. Allow the paint to dry.

11. Apply 1 or 2 more layers of Mod Podge over the entire ornament (ribbon and all) except the tassel obviously, and it will be pretty much unbreakable!

12. Stand back and admire your work! It’s DIY, its glam, and its a Christmas ornament that will last a very long time. Pack it up in a cute box for your best friend or coworker, or hang it on your tree.

The final product.

13. I love words of affirmation. Why not add something like this to your gift box. “When I think of you, I think of someone who is stylish and absolutely one-of-a-kind. Just like this ornament I made for you. With love, [Your name here]”. I wouldn’t even be mad if someone copied this and gave it to me.
